Psychodidae is a very large family of true flies. You might know them by other names like drain flies, sink flies, or moth flies. Some people call them sewer flies or sewer gnats. They get the name moth flies because their bodies and wings are short and hairy. This makes them look a bit like tiny moths. There are more than 2,600 different species in this family. Most of these living things live in warm, humid places around the world.

The life of a drain fly happens in several steps. It starts when a female lays between 30 and 100 eggs. She lays them just above the water line in moist drains. In about 48 hours, these eggs hatch into larvae. These larvae look like long, thin, worm-like cylinders. They are nearly transparent and have a black head. They live in wet sludge or bathroom sinks. They eat bacteria found in the waste.

These tiny larvae have a special way of breathing. They cannot take oxygen from the water. Instead, they use a small dark tube called a spiracle. This tube is located on their back end. The larvae must reach the water surface to breathe air. This stage lasts between 9 and 15 days. After that, they enter the pupal stage. This stage lasts from 20 to 40 hours. During this time, they stay near the surface and change into adults.

Scientists have studied these flies for a long time. We can find evidence of them in ancient history. Some species are preserved in amber from places like Myanmar. For example, Datzia bispina is found in Burmese amber. Other fossils come from the Eocene period in Baltic amber. We also find them in Lebanese amber from the Barremian age. These fossils show that these flies have been around for a very long time.

Adult flies behave in interesting ways. They are mostly nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They often fly near lights or strong smells. They are erratic fliers, so they move in a shaky way. They can also run very quickly on surfaces. Most adults live for about 20 days. They often breed only once in their short lives. While most are harmless, some types called Phlebotominae feed on blood. This can sometimes spread diseases to animals or people.
