A pest is any living thing that causes trouble for people.

This term is used for creatures that harm crops, livestock, or forests. Pests can also be a nuisance in our homes. Humans change the world to suit their own needs. We often do not want other creatures taking up that same space. An elephant is fine in the wild. However, an elephant becomes a pest if it tramples a farmer's crops.

Some animals are disliked because they bite or sting. This group includes wasps, bees, mosquitoes, and ticks.

Many pests work in ways that cause harm to plants. Insects can cause direct injury by eating plant tissues. This might mean they eat leaves or tunnel into stems. This can stop a plant from growing well. They can also cause indirect damage. Insects can carry germs like viruses, bacteria, or fungi. When an insect bites a plant, it may leave a wound. This wound lets the germs enter the plant.

Some insects, like true bugs, suck sap from plants. This weakens them and can cause a sticky substance to grow. This substance can block light from the leaves.

People have used many ways to control pests over time. Farmers traditionally use pesticides to protect their fields.

There are also mechanical ways to manage them. Recently, people have developed biological controls. This means using other living things to help. Some animals are pests because they live in our houses. They have adapted to our warm and sheltered buildings. They eat our food or live in our furniture. Some of these animals may not even live in the wild anymore. They have become domesticated to our homes.

There are many specific names for pests and their damage. In agriculture, insects, mites, and rodents are very important.

Together, pests and diseases can cause 40% of crop losses every year. Some plants are also called pests. In Western Australia, a plant is a pest if it harms the environment or property. An example is the caltrop plant. It has sharp, spiny burrs that can hurt feet.

Even birds can be pests at airfields. They can be sucked into aircraft engines.

Nature has its own ways of dealing with these creatures. Plants have built-in defenses to protect themselves. Some plants grow thorns or sharp spines. Others use a thick waxy coating on their leaves. Some plants even use chemicals that taste bad to stop animals from eating them.

A plant might even invite an ant to live inside its stem. The ant gets food and a home. In return, the ant protects the plant from other pests. This shows how living things are always interacting. Even a small insect can change how a whole landscape works.
