Biosecurity is a way to manage risks from living things. These risks can come from viruses, bacteria, plants, or animals.

We use biosecurity to stop these organisms from spreading where they do not belong. This might happen by accident or it could be done on purpose. The goal is to protect people, animals, and the environment from harm. It helps keep our food safe and our communities healthy.

There are many ways these measures work in our daily lives. In farming, people use rules to protect crops and livestock from pests.

One person might wash their boots to stop invasive species from moving. In labs, scientists use two different types of protection. Laboratory biosafety helps prevent the accidental release of germs. Laboratory biosecurity uses systems to stop dangerous agents from being stolen. This keeps the science safe for everyone.

People have been defining and using these rules for a long time. New Zealand was one of the first to use a big plan with its Biosecurity Act in 1993. In 2001, a group in the US called NASDA defined biosecurity as managing risks from biological threats. Later, in 2010, the World Health Organization gave a clear description of it. They said it is a way to manage risks to humans, animals, and plants. This helps protect the industries that people depend on.

Many important groups and rules exist to keep the world safe. The World Trade Organization created an agreement in 1995 to help protect agriculture. There is also the International Health Regulations, which is a binding agreement for 196 nations. In the US, the FDA has a program to help prepare for emergencies. This program focuses on medical countermeasures, which are drugs used to treat or prevent sickness. These tools are vital during big events like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Biosecurity connects to many things you see in the world. You might see signs on a farm to keep animals safe from diseases. It is also why scientists work in special labs with strict rules. When a new sickness spreads around the world, it is called a pandemic. Biosecurity helps countries work together to stop these sicknesses from crossing borders. By following these rules, we help keep the whole planet healthy.
