It is a rule for people, animals, and goods. This rule helps prevent the spread of sickness. Quarantine is different from medical isolation. Isolation is for people who are already sick. Quarantine is for people who might have been near a germ. They do not have a medical diagnosis yet, but they might be carrying something.

This way of working follows a simple idea. People or items are kept away from others for a set time. This allows time to see if any sickness appears. For example, the Black Death was a very bad plague. It killed about 30% of the people in Europe. It also killed a large part of the people in Asia. Because of this, governments created ways to contain the sickness.

Many people helped develop these rules over many years. In 1025, a doctor named Ibn Sina wrote about it. He wrote a medical book called The Canon of Medicine. He said that separating people was a scientific way to stop disease. In the 1300s, the city of Ragusa used a 30-day wait. This was called a trentino. In 1448, the Venetian Senate changed this to 40 days.

History shows many places using these rules for different germs. In the 1918 flu pandemic, people used many ways to stay safe. They closed schools, churches, and theaters. Some places used a cordon sanitaire. This is a rule that stops movement in a whole area. In 1831, Egypt started a Quarantine Board in Alexandria. The Ottoman Empire also set up rules in Istanbul in 1838.

Quarantine is a tool that connects to how we live today. We saw many large quarantines during the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020. Different countries have different laws for this. For example, Australia uses the Biosecurity Act 2015. These rules are part of a bigger plan called biosecurity. They help keep our whole world healthy. Understanding these steps helps us manage big outbreaks of sickness.
