Right to health

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

The right to health is a very important idea for everyone. It is an economic, social, and cultural right. This means all people are entitled to a basic standard of health. It is not just about not being sick. True health includes being well in your body and your mind. It also includes being well with other people in your community.

Many different rules and agreements explain how this right works. The World Health Organization (WHO) created its Constitution in 1946. This document was the first formal way to name this right in international law. It says health is the highest standard a person can reach. This includes helping children grow up healthy. It also means sharing medical knowledge with everyone. Governments have a job to protect and uphold these rights.

History shows how these ideas grew over many years. In 1948, the United Nations made the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 25 of this paper says everyone needs food, clothing, and housing. It also says people need medical care and social services. This declaration also mentions special care for mothers and children. Later, in 1965, a new rule helped stop racial discrimination. This rule said everyone deserves the right to public health and medical care.

In 1966, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights was made. Article 12 of this treaty defines the right to health more clearly. A special report called General Comment No. 14 came out in 2000. This report says the right to health is not a right to be healthy. No one can control everything that makes a person sick. Instead, it is a set of freedoms and things people are entitled to. These things depend on what resources a country has available.

Health is also closely tied to many other human rights. To be healthy, people need good food, clean water, and safe homes. A professor named Jonathan Mann studied this link deeply. He believed that health and human rights work together in a dynamic way. In 1994, he and his colleagues started a group to highlight this. They showed that health policies can affect human rights. They also showed that when rights are broken, health can suffer.
