Housing is much more than just a building. It is a shelter where people live and stay safe.

A home gives us space to prepare our food. It is a place to store our many belongings. We use it to care for children and the elderly. It also provides us with much-needed privacy.

Without a home, it is hard to find rest or leisure.

There are two main ways that housing works. Market housing is bought and sold by private people or companies. The price of these homes changes based on supply and demand. This includes things like apartments and condominiums. Non-market housing is different because it is managed by governments or non-profit groups. These homes are often called social or cooperative housing. The goal is to help families with low incomes by offering lower rent. This is known as subsidized housing.

People have worked to improve housing for a long time. In the 19th century, social reform movements began to focus on housing. They saw it as a basic need for every human. In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights changed things. Article 25 recognized housing as a human right. This means having a home is necessary for a good life. From the 1950s to the 1970s, many governments built more public housing. This helped the supply of homes grow around the world.

Many things can change how much a home costs. For example, the macroeconomy plays a big role in prices. In 2018, research showed how price changes affect property values. In the United States, a 1% rise in interest rates can change prices. In Hong Kong, a 1% rise in certain rates can make prices drop. Since the early 2000s, many people view housing as an investment property. This happens because of how mortgage debt is handled globally. This can make it harder to find enough homes for everyone.

Having a good home is very important for your health. A safe and stable home helps your body and mind stay well. Poor housing can lead to many physical problems. Dampness, mold, and a lack of heat are bad for health. Overcrowded homes can also cause stress or sickness. Children are at risk from things like lead or injuries. A good home helps people stay healthy so they can work and learn.
