Personal life

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Personal life is the story of an individual. It is the sum of all your own choices. These choices help create your personal identity. Today, we use this term to describe our own interests. This includes our hobbies and how we dress. It also includes our friends and the food we eat.

Our personal life is often defined by leisure time. This is the time we spend outside of work. Many people try to find a good work-life balance. This means keeping jobs and fun activities separate.

In the past, life was very different for most people. Most people were not hunter-gatherers. They lived in small groups and worked on farms. They had to spend most of their time finding food. They also had to find shelter from the weather. Because of this, leisure time was very scarce. People did not choose their jobs based on what they liked. Instead, they did what their community needed to survive.

Many ancient cultures saw people as part of a group. An individual might not even think about personal choice. They saw themselves as part of a tribe or a nation. Some even saw themselves as part of the cosmos. This idea of individual rights began to change over time. An English philosopher named John Locke lived from 1632 to 1704. He spoke about the natural rights of people. He said people have rights to life and liberty. He also said people can pursue happiness.

Leisure activities help define our personal lives today. We can split these into two main kinds. Passive activities do not require much effort. Examples include watching TV or listening to music. Active activities require more physical or mental energy. You might go jogging or play a game of chess.

A 2007 survey in the United States showed how people spend time. People over age 15 used 4.9 hours of leisure time daily. More than half of that time, or 2.6 hours, was spent watching TV. Only 19 minutes were spent on sports or exercise.

Privacy is another very important part of personal life. People in Western countries like the United States value it. Privacy has two different meanings. The first is informational privacy. This is the right to be left alone regarding private details. The second is decisional privacy. This is the freedom from too much control by others.

In some places, privacy is a luxury. Many people in Africa and Asia still face hard survival issues. They may lack secure shelter or reliable food. For them, personal life is not the main focus.
