Leisure is a special kind of time. It is time spent away from work, chores, or school.

Some people call it free time. Others say it is a quality of experience. This means doing something just for the joy of it. You feel a sense of freedom and choice. You are not doing a task because you must. You do it because you want to. This is often called doing something "for its own sake."

There are many ways to use this time. Some people enjoy social leisure. This means doing fun things with other people. You might join a sports club or a group. Others enjoy serious leisure. This is a way of looking at hobbies. Serious leisure is a big commitment. It requires effort, knowledge, and training.

You might collect stamps or help a public wetland. These activities can feel like a "leisure career." People find great satisfaction in learning these skills. It is more than just a quick game.

In the past, leisure was different. For a long time, it was a privilege for the upper class.

This changed in the mid-to-late 19th century. In Great Britain, people began to have more money. They also worked fewer hours. The 1874 Factory Act limited the workweek to 56.5 hours. This helped more people find time for fun. In the United States, immigrants often had to work much harder. This was different from the life they knew in Europe.

Different places have their own traditions. In Canada, people enjoy hockey and board games. They also like singalongs and roller skating. In France, leisure became very organized in the 1800s. In the city of Lille, there were many clubs. There were 63 singing clubs and 23 bowling clubs. In Britain, the seaside became a popular place to visit. Cheap hotels and trains made it easy to travel. By 1900, sports were a huge part of life. In Britain, sports made up three percent of the total national product.

Leisure connects us to the world around us. Reading became a popular hobby after 1900. In 1935, Allen Lane started Penguin Books. He made inexpensive paperback books. These were easy for everyone to buy. You could find them in stores like Woolworths. Even the internet helps us today. It lets people share their hobbies with others.
