A blockade is a way to stop things from moving. It happens when military force is used to block a country or region. This can stop food, supplies, or weapons from arriving. It can also stop people or messages from being sent. A blockade is different from an embargo or a sanction. Those are legal rules about trade. A blockade uses physical barriers to stop movement. It can happen on the sea or on land.

There are three main ways to set up a blockade. A close blockade means warships stay right in sight of the coast. This is very effective but also very hard. Ships must stay at sea even during big storms. A distant blockade means ships stay far away from the coast. They try to catch ships in the open ocean instead. A loose blockade is a mix of both. Ships stay just out of sight behind the horizon. They wait to lure the enemy out to fight.

People have used blockades for thousands of years. Early attempts were hard because ships could not stay at sea for long. The British Royal Navy made the first successful full naval blockades. They did this during the Seven Years' War from 1754 to 1763. They blocked the French coast to hurt their economy. This helped the British win Canada in 1763. Later, the Royal Navy used blockades during the Napoleonic Wars.

Blockades have played huge roles in many famous wars. The Union used a blockade during the American Civil War. This helped during the years of 1861 to 1865. In World War I, the Allies blockaded the Central Powers. This stopped food and materials from reaching them. Germany tried to use U-boats to blockade Britain. This did not work in the end. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, President Kennedy used a blockade. He wanted to stop missiles from reaching Cuba.

Modern laws have very strict rules for blockades. Under international law, a blockade is an act of war. It is only legal if a country uses it for self-defense. It is never legal to start a war of aggression with one. Using a blockade to starve civilians is a war crime. It can even be a crime against humanity. Some people try to break blockades using fast ships. These are called blockade runners. Others use planes to fly supplies in, like in Berlin.
