A country can use military force to block food or weapons. They can also block messages or people. This is different from a trade ban. A blockade uses physical barriers to stop movement. It can happen at sea or on land. Today, planes can also be used to block air traffic.

There are different ways to make a blockade. In a close blockade, ships stay near the coast. This is hard work because ships face big storms. In a distant blockade, ships stay far away from the coast. They try to catch ships in the open ocean. Some people try to break a blockade. They use fast ships called blockade runners. Others use planes to fly supplies in.
