Unconventional warfare is a different way of fighting. Most wars use large armies in big battles. This is called conventional warfare. Unconventional warfare uses smaller, hidden actions instead.

It includes things like spying or sabotage. Some people also call it guerrilla warfare. These groups use surprise to win. They try to wear down an enemy over time. This helps avoid a much larger, open war. It is a way to win without big battles.

This type of warfare has many specific methods. It often targets how people think and feel. Groups try to win "hearts and minds" of civilians. They want to make the enemy's leaders lose control.

Special Forces may go deep behind enemy lines. They do not fight alone there. Instead, they train and equip local people. These locals might oppose their own government. This can help a resistance movement grow. They use small, fast groups to stay hidden.

We can look back to find its early roots. Benjamin Church is a very important name here.

He lived during the 17th and 18th centuries. He fought in wars between colonists and Native Americans. Church wanted to learn how to fight better. He studied the ways of Native American tribes. He learned how to use the land for cover. He created small, flexible units for his troops. These units were much faster than large militias.

Benjamin Church is often called the father of unconventional warfare.

He even wrote a guide about his methods. In 1716, his book was published as a memoir. This book is seen as a first military manual. His ideas helped colonial officers in later wars. This included the fight against the British Empire. He also used Native American warriors to help his men. This helped his soldiers learn new skills. It made his units much more effective.

Today, the world of warfare has changed a lot. The Atomic Age brought new and scary ideas.

Some people think technology changed how nations fight. Now, countries might try to hide who is acting. They might use "soft power" to reach people. This can include using information to change minds. We see these ideas in many modern conflicts. Even special forces use these old and new ways. They still work with local groups to reach goals.
