Guerrilla warfare is a special way of fighting. It is used by small groups of people. These groups are often called irregulars or partisans. They do not fight in big, formal armies. Instead, they use surprise to win.

They use tactics like ambushes and raids. An ambush is a surprise attack on an enemy. They also use hit-and-run moves. This means they strike quickly and then hide. This helps them fight much larger forces. They want to tire out the enemy. Eventually, they hope the big army will leave.

This way of fighting is very old. Long ago, a leader named Sun Tzu wrote about it. He wrote in a book called The Art of War. In the 3rd century BC, a Roman named Quintus Fabius Maximus used these ways. He was called Cunctator, which means "the delayer." He used these tactics to wear down Hannibal's army. In China, a general named Peng Yue also used these methods. He attacked supply convoys during the Chu-Han contention.

The word "guerrilla" comes from the Spanish language. It is a small version of the word for "war." This means "little war." The name shows the difference in size. The small groups fight much bigger state armies. This term became popular during the Peninsular War in the early 1800s. During this time, Spanish and Portuguese people fought against Napoleon's troops. They used these tactics to defeat a much larger army.

Guerrillas often hide in places that are hard to reach. They might use mountains or thick woods. This makes it hard for big armies to find them. They also rely on help from local people. These people might give them food or information. In the 1920s, Abd el-Krim led Berber tribes in the Rif War. They even used tunnels to fight. In Ireland, units called "flying columns" fought in the countryside. They would attack for only 10 to 30 minutes before leaving.

Many famous leaders have studied these ways of fighting. Che Guevara wrote a book about guerrilla warfare. He developed a theory called "foco" theory. This idea says small groups can start a big change. Mao Zedong also used these tactics during the Chinese Civil War. He said that if the enemy advances, you should retreat. If the enemy camps, you should harass them. If the enemy tires, you should attack.
