An insurgency is a type of armed rebellion. It happens when small groups fight a much larger government. These small groups are often lightly armed. They use a style of fighting called guerrilla warfare. This means they do not fight in big, open battles. Instead, they use quick raids and ambushes. They want to change the existing political order. This is different from terrorism. While some insurgents use terror, their main goal is political control.

Insurgents use special ways to win. They often try to blend in with regular people. They might live in rural areas to stay hidden. A major goal is to gain control over the local population. To do this, they may provide services like food or safety. They might also use subversion to weaken the government. Subversion means taking over the jobs the government usually does. This helps the insurgents gain support from the people.

History shows many different kinds of these fights. In the 1600s, rebels called the kuruc fought in Hungary. During the American Civil War, the United States fought the Confederate States. The Supreme Court said this was an insurrection. Some countries even recognized the Confederacy as a fighting power. For example, Great Britain did this in May 1861. Spain and Brazil also recognized them later that year.

Sometimes, these conflicts have many different sides. This is called being multipolar. In a multipolar fight, there is no single leader or group. The Angolan Civil War had many groups fighting. There were the MPLA and UNITA groups. At the same time, a group called FLEC fought for Cabinda. The Iraq insurgency is another example with many groups. In Somalia, different small states fought each other from 1998 to 2006.

These fights can be very difficult for everyone involved. Because insurgents live among civilians, violence can happen to innocent people. Both the government and the rebels may cause harm to the population. Some people join these movements to find safety or jobs. Others join to fight for their identity or rights. Even when the fighting is hard, it often leads to new governments. These new leaders may have to make big compromises to keep peace.
