An insurgency is a fight for power. It happens when small groups fight a large government. These small groups do not have many weapons. They often use guerrilla warfare. This means they use quick raids and hide from the big army.

Insurgents often live near regular people. They try to blend in to stay safe. Because they live among civilians, these fights can be very violent. Both the government and the rebels may hurt innocent people.

To win, insurgents try to gain control of the people. They might provide food or safety to get help. They may also use subversion. Subversion is a way to weaken a government by taking over its jobs.

Some fights have many sides. This is called being multipolar. In a multipolar fight, there is no single leader. Many different groups might fight each other at once. This makes the conflict very hard to stop. Some groups may also use terrorism to cause fear. However, most insurgencies have a clear political goal to change how a land is run.
