Spanish armies fought in large, open battles. One famous victory was the Battle of Bailén in 1808. This was the first major defeat for Napoleon's army in Europe. Many people also used guerrilla warfare to fight. Guerrilla warfare uses small groups for surprise raids and ambushes. These fighters made it very hard for the French to move. They kept the French troops busy and tired for years.

Different leaders and armies played key roles in the fighting.

Napoleon called the conflict a "Spanish ulcer." This meant the war drained his resources and soldiers. It helped other parts of Europe challenge his power. Even after the fighting stopped, life was very difficult. The war broke the social and economic fabric of Spain and Portugal. However, it also led to the Spanish Constitution of 1812. This document became a very important part of European history.
