The Continental System was a large plan to stop trade. It was a type of embargo used by the French leader, Napoleon I. Napoleon wanted to defeat the British Empire during the Napoleonic Wars. He knew Britain was a center for business and making things. Since he could not beat the British navy at sea, he tried a new way. He wanted to use economic warfare to hurt Britain. This meant he tried to stop Britain from making money through trade.

This plan worked by cutting off all connections to Britain. Napoleon issued the Berlin Decree on 21 November 1806. This rule said that no goods from Britain could enter any country allied with France. He even wanted to stop the mail from going to Britain. He also made the Milan Decree in 1807. This rule said that any neutral ships using British ports would be seized. Napoleon hoped that isolating Britain would cause its economy to collapse. He believed this would force the British to ask for peace.

Napoleon began this system after he could not invade Britain. In 1805, he had a large army ready at the Camp of Boulogne. However, the British navy defeated a French and Spanish fleet at Trafalgar. This defeat made Napoleon stop his plans to invade the island. He turned his focus to the land instead. By October 1806, the French had occupied the city of Berlin. This gave Napoleon control over many parts of Europe to enforce his rules.

History shows that the system had many different effects. British exports to Europe fell by 25% to 55% at first. However, Britain found new trade partners in North and South America. Smuggling became a huge problem for Napoleon. People moved goods in secret from places like Malta. The system also hurt France and its allies quite a bit. Many French industries like shipbuilding and rope-making declined. In some parts of Europe, the price of food went up.

Napoleon tried to fix the problems by using his army. He saw that trade was still happening in Spain and Russia. Because of this, he invaded both of those countries. The war in Spain was a hard job for his troops. His invasion of Russia in 1812 was a major disaster. This failure helped lead to his eventual downfall. The Continental System ended on 11 April 1814 after Napoleon stepped down. It remains a famous example of how trade can be used in war.
