A colonial war is a type of conflict that happens when a foreign power settles in a new land.

These wars are often called wars of conquest. This means the invading group wants total and permanent control over the area. They want to rule the land and all the people living there. These wars are different from regular wars between neighboring countries. In a regular war, the goals are often limited. In a colonial war, the goal is to create lasting stability under the new power.

These conflicts usually happen in two different stages. First, there is often a period of regular warfare. This is when an invading force fights against the local people. The local groups might be organized differently than the invaders. After this first stage, the fighting often changes into irregular warfare. This can include counter-insurgency operations. These are special missions used to prepare a territory for new settlers. Once a power has a foothold, they might launch more trips into nearby lands. They do this to stop enemies or respond to hostility.

Colonial wars became very common starting in the late 15th century. This was when European powers began taking overseas territories. Many of these wars took place in Africa and Asia during the 1800s.

The era of these wars is thought to have ended much later. Some say it ended after the Portuguese Colonial War in 1974. Others believe the Falklands War of 1982 was the last true colonial war. These early conflicts helped people study how to fight irregular wars. They also led to the first studies of counter-insurgency practices.

European armies were usually professional soldiers who lived away from their home countries.

They often had better training and discipline than the local forces. They also had more advanced equipment. However, using heavy guns was a hard job because they needed roads. In Africa, European soldiers also struggled with tropical diseases. Local people often used guerrilla tactics to fight back. This means they used quick, surprise attacks instead of big battles. Leaders like Samori Ture of the Wassoulou Empire resisted for many years. Some groups, like the Zulus, even won battles against British forces.

These wars were very hard on the people living in the colonies.

Invading powers sometimes burned villages or destroyed crops to make people give up. This happened during French campaigns in Algeria and German wars in southern Africa. In very extreme cases, it led to the Herero and Namaqua genocide. In North America, early wars were often fought in the wilderness. Many Native American tribes tried to form alliances to stay independent. For example, the Sioux, Arapaho, and Cheyenne formed a coalition in the mid-1800s. These historical events changed how many nations interact today.
