New Imperialism

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

New Imperialism was a special time in history. It happened during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During this era, many powerful nations tried to grow their empires. They wanted to take over new lands far away from home. This period was different from older times of empire building. These nations used new technology to help them expand. They focused on taking resources from the lands they conquered.

Many different countries took part in this race for land. The main players were the United Kingdom and France. Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands were also very active. Other nations included Belgium, Portugal, Russia, the United States, and Japan. These countries often competed with each other for power. They wanted new places to sell their goods. They also wanted more raw materials for their industries. This competition made the world feel very unstable.

One major event happened in 1884 at the Berlin Conference. Leaders from 15 different nations met to talk about Africa. They wanted to set rules for claiming new territory. They decided on a rule called "effective occupation." This meant a country had to actually control a place to claim it. Sadly, none of the people living in Africa were at the meeting. The leaders drew new borders on maps of Africa. They divided the continent into 50 different colonies.

Britain was a very strong power during much of this time. In 1870, Britain held 31.8% of the world's manufacturing capacity. However, other countries began to catch up quickly. By 1910, Britain's share dropped to 14.7%. The United States rose to 35.3% of manufacturing. Germany also grew to reach 15.9%. This change made Britain worry about its place in the world. They had to work hard to keep their trade going.

This era changed how people lived in many ways. Some leaders believed they had a "civilizing mission." They thought they were helping the lands they ruled. However, this often led to unfair treatment. Many people fought back against the new rules. For example, the Maji Maji Rebellion happened in German East Africa. Some colonies eventually gained their independence after World War II. This marked the end of many imperial empires.
