The decolonisation of Africa was a huge change. It was a series of political shifts between the mid-1950s and 1975. During this time, many colonial governments collapsed. These governments had formed during the Scramble for Africa. This was a race for land between 1870 and 1914. European powers wanted Africa's natural resources. They claimed almost all the land as colonies. This happened at the Berlin Conference of 1885. Most African states lost their right to rule themselves. Only Liberia and Ethiopia stayed free.

Many things helped this change happen. First, many Africans fought in the two World Wars. About one million sub-Saharan Africans served in European armies. This service helped them gain political awareness. They began to expect more respect and self-rule. In 1941, leaders signed the Atlantic Charter. This document said people should choose their own government. It was a major stepping stone for freedom. Later, the United Nations declared that colonial rule denied human rights.

New leaders rose up to lead the movement. Many were educated in Western universities. They learned about the idea of self-determination. This means people should rule themselves. Famous leaders included Kwame Nkrumah from Ghana. Jomo Kenyatta led in Kenya. Julius Nyerere led in Tanganyika. Patrice Lumumba led in the Congo. These men organized people to demand change. They turned nationalism into a powerful force.

Change did not always happen peacefully. Some places saw quick changes through talking. Other places faced hard wars and fighting. The Algerian War was a major conflict. There was also the Mau Mau rebellion. The Congo Crisis was another difficult time. The Angolan War of Independence was very hard too. Some fights led to large death tolls. Still, many nations gained independence through negotiation. By 1977, 50 African countries were free.

Today, we see the results of this history. Africa is now made of many sovereign states. These are countries that rule themselves. The process changed how the world works. It moved power back to the people living there. It showed that people can fight for their rights. This era shaped the modern map of Africa. It remains a very important part of world history.
