The land was made of the former Eastern Region of Nigeria. Most people living there belonged to the Igbo ethnic group. Other groups like the Ijaw, Efik, and Ibibio also lived there. The region had many rivers flowing into the ocean. These included the Imo, Cross, and Niger rivers.

The country formed because of great tension in Nigeria. Nigeria had become independent from the United Kingdom in 1960. However, the new borders did not match the different ethnic groups. This caused many riots and fights between different people. In 1966, military coups changed the leaders in Nigeria. These events caused much sadness and violence for the Igbo people. Because of this, a leader named Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu declared Biafra an independent state.

War broke out almost immediately after Biafra declared independence. The Nigerian military fought to take the land back. This became known as the Nigerian Civil War. Biafra had fewer soldiers and less equipment than the Nigerian army. However, the Biafrans were fighting in their own homes. Some countries like Gabon and Haiti recognized Biafra as a real country. Other nations like France and Portugal gave them secret military support.

The war was very hard for the people living there. The Nigerian government used a blockade to stop supplies from entering Biafra. This meant that food could not get to the people. Because of this, many people suffered from hunger.

Many people around the world saw images of hungry children on television. This led many groups to send help through the Biafran airlift. During the three years of war, about two million Biafran civilians died. Most of these people were very small children.

In 1970, the war finally came to an end. President Ojukwu fled to the Ivory Coast to find safety. A man named Philip Effiong became the second president. He helped the Biafran forces surrender to the Nigerian government. Even after the war, things remained difficult for the Igbo people. Some people lost their homes and their money in banks. Today, some groups still work to create a new Biafran state.
