Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was a very important leader in Nigeria.

He was born in November 1933 in a place called Zungeru. His father, Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu, was a very wealthy businessman. Ojukwu went to many different schools to learn. He studied at King's College in Lagos and Epsom College in England. Later, he went to Oxford University. He chose to study modern history instead of law. He also loved sports like rugby and javelin throwing.

After his studies, Ojukwu started a career in the civil service. He worked in several places like Udi, Umuahia, and Aba. He even had to learn the Igbo language to talk to the people there. Later, he decided to join the Nigerian army in 1957. He started as a private soldier in Zaria. He worked very hard to become an officer. He went to school in England again to train. He rose through the ranks to become a major.

In 1966, big changes happened in the Nigerian government. A group of soldiers took control in a coup. This led to new leaders for the country. The new leader, Aguiyi-Ironsi, made Ojukwu the military governor of the Eastern Region. This region was home to many Igbo people. Soon, there was a lot of trouble and violence in other parts of Nigeria. Many Igbo people were in danger. Ojukwu wanted to protect his people from this harm.

To keep the Igbo people safe, Ojukwu declared that the Eastern Region would be its own country. He called this new country the Republic of Biafra. This decision started the Nigerian Civil War in 1967. The war was very difficult for everyone. The Nigerian military blockaded Biafra to stop supplies from coming in. This caused a mass famine where many people had no food. Because of new technology, the world saw the war on television.

Biafra eventually lost the war in 1970. Many millions of people died during this sad time. Ojukwu had to leave Nigeria and live in Ivory Coast for a while. Later, the Nigerian president, Shehu Shagari, allowed him to come home in 1981. Ojukwu lived the rest of his life in Nigeria. He died in London in 2011 at the age of 78. People still have many different feelings about him today. Some see him as a hero, while others disagree with his actions.
