As a young boy, Michael went to a school run by the Japanese. He learned how to read, write, and count in Japanese. Later, he went to many other schools to study. He even earned a teaching certificate in 1957. He worked as a teacher for many years before his political life began.

Before he was a leader of the whole country, he had other jobs. He worked as a radio announcer in a place called Wewak. This job helped many people learn his name. He also worked as a translator because he knew English well. He was part of a group of educated people who wanted change. They wanted the rules in their land to be fair for everyone. In 1967, he helped start a group called the Pangu Party.

Somare was very good at helping different groups of people agree.

At that time, some people wanted to stay with Australia. Other groups wanted to be separate and independent. Somare worked to bring these different sides together. He helped lead the country into independence in 1975. He also served as a minister for foreign affairs from 1988 to 1992. He even served as a governor for the East Sepik Province.

Even when things were hard, Somare kept working for his people. In 2011, there was a big disagreement about who should be the leader. The Supreme Court even had to step in to help. This was a very difficult time for the government. Eventually, the crisis ended when a new election was held. Somare stayed active in his home province until he retired. He showed how a leader can help build a new nation.
