Sir Lynden Oscar Pindling was a very important leader in the Bahamas. He was born on March 22, 1930, in Nassau. His father, Arnold, was a policeman and a businessman from Jamaica. His mother, Viola, came from the island of Acklins. Lynden was their only child. As a young boy, he helped at his father's grocery store. He was the chief delivery boy on his bicycle.

Lynden worked very hard in school to prepare for his future. He attended many different junior schools in Nassau. He even took piano lessons from Timothy Gibson. Gibson was a famous musician who wrote the Bahamian National anthem. In 1946, Lynden graduated from the Government High School. Later, he traveled to London to study at King's College. He earned a law degree and became a lawyer in 1953.

Lynden entered politics by joining the Progressive Liberal Party, or the PLP. He became a leader for the party in 1956. One famous moment happened on April 27, 1965. This day is called "Black Tuesday" in the Bahamas. During a speech, Lynden threw the Speaker's Mace out of a window. This was a dramatic way to show power to the people. He later helped the Bahamas become an independent nation on July 10, 1973.

As the first prime minister, Lynden did many things for his country. He helped start the National Insurance Scheme for social security. He also helped create the College of The Bahamas. He even helped form the Royal Bahamas Defence Force. However, his time in power also had hard moments. People investigated his government about money and corruption. Some reports claimed that drug smugglers were involved with his party.

Lynden stayed in politics for a very long time. He won many elections until he finally lost in 1992. The Free National Movement, led by Hubert Ingraham, won that year. Lynden accepted the loss with a very kind speech. He retired from public life shortly after that. He died on August 26, 2000, at the age of 70. Many people in the Bahamas still remember him as the "Father of the Nation."
