His leadership changed how people lived and worked in the nation. He is remembered for making Singapore one of the four Asian Tigers. This means the country grew very fast in wealth and power.

His family was Peranakan Chinese and had a good social standing. He studied law at Cambridge University in England. After he finished his studies, he became a lawyer. He even started his own law firm called Lee & Lee. He returned to Singapore in 1950 to practice his new profession. His early work as a lawyer helped him learn about people.

He helped start the People's Action Party, also known as the PAP. This group gained a lot of support from working people. In 1959, the PAP won an election and Lee became prime minister. He wanted Singapore to be its own sovereign nation. He led a merger to form Malaysia in 1963. However, Singapore was later expelled from Malaysia in 1965. This meant Singapore became a fully independent country.

As a leader, Lee made many big changes for the nation.

He focused on economic reforms and building new cities. He worked to stop corruption and promote meritocracy. This meant people could succeed based on their own hard work. He also pushed for multiracialism to help different groups live together. His government was known for being very strict. He limited some freedoms like the press to keep the country stable. He believed strong rules helped the nation grow quickly.

Lee stayed in government for a very long time. He stepped down as prime minister in 1990. He continued to serve in the Cabinet as a senior minister until 2004. Later, he was a minister mentor until he retired in 2011.
