Lee Kuan Yew was a central figure in the history of Singapore.

He served as the nation's first prime minister from 1959 to 1990. As a statesman and barrister, he is known as a founding father. He helped transform Singapore from a colonial territory into a highly developed nation. His leadership turned the country into one of the four Asian Tigers. This term describes economies that grew very rapidly in Asia. Lee's work shaped the country's economy, education, and healthcare systems.

Lee was born on September 16, 1923, in Singapore.

His family was of Peranakan Chinese descent. His father, Lee Chin Koon, worked as a storekeeper for the Shell Oil Company. His mother, Chua Jim Neo, was highly educated in English. The family was considered prosperous and held a high social standing. However, the Great Depression caused their family fortunes to decline. Lee's upbringing was shaped by his mother's strength during these hard times.

During his youth, Lee showed great academic talent. He attended Raffles Institution and topped the Senior Cambridge examinations in 1940. This achievement earned him scholarships to study at Raffles College. During this time, he met his future wife, Kwa Geok Choo. World War II soon disrupted his studies. The Japanese occupation of Singapore began in February 1942. Lee survived the Sook Ching operation, where many Chinese men were targeted. He later worked for the Japanese propaganda department as an English specialist. These experiences shaped his belief that people must be able to govern themselves.

After the war, Lee traveled to the United Kingdom for higher education.

He studied law at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. He graduated with a Starred First in Law in 1949. He was also awarded the Fitzwilliam's Whitlock Prize for being the top student. Lee and Kwa Geok Choo married in secret in December 1947. In 1950, Lee returned to Singapore to practice law. He founded the law firm Lee & Lee and worked with many trade unions.

Lee entered politics by co-founding the People's Action Party (PAP) in 1954.

The PAP gained strong support from the working class and trade unions. In the 1955 general election, Lee won a seat in the Tanjong Pagar division. He became a leader of the opposition against British colonial rule. By 1959, the PAP won its first major electoral victory. This allowed Lee to become Singapore's first prime minister. He sought to move Singapore toward full sovereignty from the British Empire.

Singapore's path to independence involved complex political changes. Lee led Singapore into a merger with Malaya, Sarawak, and Sabah. This created the nation of Malaysia in 1963.

However, racial strife and ideological differences caused problems within the federation. Singapore was eventually expelled from Malaysia in 1965. This led to Singapore becoming a fully independent nation on August 9, 1965.

Lee then focused on major economic reforms and urban development.

Lee's administration was known for its specific style of governance. He promoted meritocracy, which means people succeed based on ability. He also championed multiracialism to help different ethnic groups live together. His government was often described as an illiberal democracy. This means he used strict rules to maintain social stability. He restricted press freedoms, public assembly, and certain civil liberties. He believed in "Asian values," which prioritized the community over individual rights. From 1968 to 1981, the PAP faced no opposition in Parliament.

Lee Kuan Yew remained an influential leader long after his time as prime minister. He stepped down in 1990 but stayed in the Cabinet. He served as a senior minister until 2004 and a minister mentor until 2011. He was respected globally as an elder statesman and advisor. Lee died of pneumonia on March 23, 2015, at the age of 91.
