Tunku Abdul Rahman was a statesman who shaped the modern nation of Malaysia. He is widely recognized as the country's founding father. Tunku served as the first prime minister of Malaya starting in 1957. He held this position until 1970. He also led the Alliance Party and served as president of UMNO. His leadership was central to the Malayan Declaration of Independence. He was also a key figure in the creation of Malaysia in 1963.

Tunku's early life was marked by both royal status and personal hardship. He was born on February 8, 1903, in Alor Setar, Kedah. He was the seventh son of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah. The Sultan was the 26th ruler of the Kedah Sultanate. Tunku came from a very large family with 45 children. During his childhood, his region faced outbreaks of cholera and malaria. Several of his siblings died from these illnesses. Tunku also suffered from frequent bouts of malaria himself.

Education played a vital role in preparing Tunku for his future career. He attended several schools in Malaya and Thailand. At age 17, he received a scholarship to study in England. He initially struggled with his studies in the United Kingdom. However, he eventually studied under a tutor named Basil Atkinson. This preparation helped him pass the "Little Go" entrance examination. He then attended St Catharine's College at the University of Cambridge. He graduated in 1925 with a Bachelor of Arts in law and history.

Before entering national politics, Tunku worked in the colonial civil service. He served as a Cadet in the Kedah Civil Service in 1931. He later worked as an Assistant District Officer in Kulim. In this role, he focused on the problems of local peasants. He later became the District Officer of Padang Terap. There, he successfully fought to drain swamps to reduce malaria. In Langkawi, he used his own resources to build roads and a jetty. These early roles showed his ability to lead local communities.

World War II brought significant challenges to Tunku and his people. In 1941, the Japanese army invaded Malaya. Tunku had previously prepared for such an invasion. He helped build "Long Houses" for civilians to use during evacuations. During the occupation, he worked as a District Officer and later as a Superintendent of Education. He faced frequent friction with Japanese officials. Tunku also took risks to help people escaping from forced labor projects. After the Japanese surrendered in 1945, he helped with peace-keeping efforts.

Tunku's political rise was defined by his work toward self-governance. He won the leadership of UMNO in 1951. The following year, he formed the Alliance Party. This coalition included the Malaysian Chinese Association and the Malaysian Indian Congress. The Alliance won a major victory in the 1955 general election. This allowed Tunku to become the chief minister of the Federation of Malaya. He later secured independence through the Treaty of London in 1956. He officially proclaimed independence in 1957.

The formation of Malaysia in 1963 was one of his greatest achievements. This new nation included Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak. However, Tunku faced difficult ethnic tensions during his leadership. Relations between his government and Singapore worsened over time. In 1965, he resolved to expel Singapore from the federation. This separation was finalized through the Independence of Singapore Agreement 1965. Following violent unrest in 1969, Tunku stepped down as prime minister in 1970. He was succeeded by Abdul Razak Hussein.
