His leadership helped shape the modern economy and social structure of the nation. He was a key member of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) for many years. His career spans decades of military service, academic excellence, and high-level governance.

Lee's path to leadership began with a deep focus on education and mathematics. He was born in 1952 during the era of British colonial rule in Singapore. He attended Nanyang Primary School and Catholic High School before winning prestigious scholarships. In 1974, he graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, with first-class honours in mathematics. He also earned a diploma in computer science with distinction. Some experts believed he could have been a world-class research mathematician. However, he chose to pursue politics to help his country succeed. He later earned a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University in 1980.

Before entering politics, Lee had a distinguished career in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). He joined the military in 1972 and served as a commissioned officer. He rose through the ranks with remarkable speed during his service. In July 1983, at age 31, he became a brigadier-general. This made him the youngest person in Singapore's history to reach that rank. During his time in the army, he even led rescue operations following the Sentosa cable car disaster. He eventually left the SAF in 1984 to begin his political journey.

Lee's political career started in the mid-1980s as part of a leadership transition. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament for Teck Ghee in 1984. He held several important roles, such as Minister of State for Trade and Industry. He also served as the first chairman of the PAP Youth Committee. This committee was designed to give younger citizens a way to share their opinions. In 1990, when Goh Chok Tong became Prime Minister, Lee was appointed Deputy Prime Minister. Even while battling lymphoma in the early 1990s, he continued his duties. He successfully underwent chemotherapy and went into remission.

As Prime Minister from 2004 to 2024, Lee managed many complex national issues.

His government enacted a five-day work week and extended maternity leave for workers. He also proposed building integrated resorts to boost the tourism industry. This led to the creation of Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa. Lee also managed the country through the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. He led the national economic recovery during these difficult periods of recession. His administration also worked to expand social safety nets and public housing.

Lee's leadership also involved significant changes to laws and international relations. In 2022, Singapore became the only Southeast Asian country to sanction Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. His government also repealed Section 377A, which legalised male same-sex sexual activity.

However, his tenure also faced criticism from various groups. Some people argued that he exercised too much control over political discussion. Critics pointed to the 2019 Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act. They worried this law might discourage free speech in the country. He also faced a public dispute with his siblings regarding a family home at 38 Oxley Road.

Throughout his long career, Lee maintained a style of technocratic governance. This means he focused on using technical expertise to make political decisions. He worked to reduce inequality through various government programs. Despite the criticisms, he remained a central figure in Singapore's global presence. He met with many world leaders, including various United States presidents.
