He served on the student union committee. He also worked as the editor of a magazine called Oway. In 1936, he was expelled from the school. This happened because he would not name a writer who criticized an official. This event led to a three-month strike by many students. Eventually, the university let him return to his studies.

After university, Aung San joined many political groups. He wanted to end British rule in Burma. In 1938, he joined a group called the Dobama Asiayone. Members of this group used the title "Thakin." This word means "lord" or "master." They used it to show that Burmese people were the true masters of their land. He also helped start the Communist Party of Burma in 1939. He later helped form the People's Revolutionary Party to fight for freedom.

During World War II, Aung San made many big choices.
