He was a general and a politician. He ruled the country for many years in different ways. He served as the head of government from 1958 to 1960. Later, he held power again from 1962 to 1974. He was also the head of state from 1962 to 1981. His long rule changed how the nation functioned for decades.

His rise to power began with military training. In the early 1940s, he was one of thirty men. This group was known as the Thirty Comrades. They went to receive military training to fight for independence. Ne Win used the name Bo Ne Win during this time. He helped organize resistance during the Japanese occupation. After the war, he worked to rebuild the Burmese army.

Ne Win took control of the country through a coup. A coup is when a leader takes power by force. This happened on March 2, 1962. He said that democracy was not right for Burma. He dissolved the legislature and suspended the constitution. He then started a single-party state. He founded the Burma Socialist Programme Party, or the BSPP.

His government followed a plan called the Burmese Way to Socialism. This system used ideas from nationalism, Marxism, and Buddhism. He focused on Burmese language and culture. He also made sure the country stayed neutral during the Cold War. This meant he kept distance from the United States and the Soviet Union. He had good relations with China for a time.

However, relations with China broke briefly between 1967 and 1971.

Eventually, many people wanted change in Burma. In 1988, a large protest called the 8888 Uprising occurred. This event led Ne Win to resign from his position in July 1988. A new military group called the SLORC took over. Ne Win lived for a few more years in the 1990s. He was eventually placed under house arrest. He died on December 5, 2002.
