Suharto's early life was quite simple and humble. He was born on June 8, 1921, in Kemusuk. This was a small village near Yogyakarta. His parents were Javanese Muslims. His family went through many changes when he was young. He lived with different relatives and foster parents. At one time, he even worked in rice paddies.

These early years helped shape the man he became. He eventually joined the military to find a stable path.

His journey into leadership began through military service. He first joined the Dutch colonial army in 1940. Later, he served in forces organized by the Japanese. After Indonesia gained independence, he joined the new Indonesian Army. He rose through the ranks to become a major general. In 1965, his troops helped stop an attempted coup. This event led to his rise to power. The MPRS appointed him acting president in March 1967.

During his rule, Indonesia saw big changes in its economy. When he started, inflation was very high at over 650%. Suharto used new economic policies to fix this. By 1969, prices in the country became stable. The economy grew by about 7% every year. This growth helped improve education and new businesses. In 1982, the government called him the "Father of Development."

He even won a medal from the United Nations in 1986. This was for helping Indonesia grow enough rice to feed itself.

However, his time as leader was also very difficult for many. Suharto ruled as an authoritarian leader. This means he held almost all the power. His government was known for being corrupt. Some say his family took between $1.5 billion and $5 billion. He also used the military to control the people. Many groups were treated unfairly or faced violence under his rule.
