On March 17, Sirik Matak reportedly forced a weeping Lon Nol to sign documents at gunpoint. On March 18, the National Assembly voted to strip Sihanouk of his power.
Following the coup, the Khmer Republic was formally established in October 1970. This new government was a semi-presidential republic. However, it was actually governed as a military dictatorship. Lon Nol eventually became the President of the Khmer Republic on March 10, 1972. This era was marked by the Cambodian Civil War. The republic's military, the Khmer National Armed Forces, fought against various groups. The government relied heavily on large amounts of American aid. This support was vital but often lacked the necessary political resolve. The war made the political situation very unstable.
By 1975, the Khmer Republic was in a state of collapse. The government controlled very little territory outside of Phnom Penh. Lon Nol's health was also failing after he suffered a stroke in 1971. His leadership had become increasingly authoritarian. In October 1971, he even suspended the National Assembly. He claimed he would no longer play the game of democracy during wartime. As the Khmer Rouge forces approached the capital, the situation became desperate. On April 1, 1975, Lon Nol resigned from his position. He fled the country just 16 days before the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh.
Lon Nol spent his final years in exile. He first traveled to Indonesia and then moved to the United States. He lived in Hawaii before settling in Fullerton, California, in 1979. He lived there with his second wife, Sovanna Lon, and his children. Lon Nol died on November 17, 1985, due to a heart condition. He was buried in Loma Vista Memorial Park. His political ideology was known as "Neo-Khmerism." This was a blend of nationalism and mysticism. He sought to reunite Khmer people across different borders. He even encouraged followers to call him "Black Papa" to emphasize his Khmer identity.
