As a young boy, he moved to France to study. He spent ten years living overseas in places like Montpellier and Paris. This long time away meant he could no longer speak his native Lao language. He had to learn it again from a palace official when he returned home.

In 1930, the prince married Queen Khamphoui. They had five children together, including Crown Prince Vong Savang. The family enjoyed many activities, such as playing tennis together.

They also liked to travel to see major tennis tournaments. The prince was also a very devout Buddhist. He took his role as a protector of the state religion very seriously. This faith was a major part of his life and his leadership.

His path to the throne was a long and difficult journey. In 1951, he served as the prime minister of Laos. After his father died in 1959, he became the Regent. He eventually became king after his father's death on October 29, 1959.

He chose not to have a formal coronation ceremony right away. He wanted to wait until the civil war in his country ended. He spent much of his rule trying to keep the country stable. This was hard because different leaders were fighting for power.

During the 1960s, the king worked to connect Laos with the rest of the world. In 1963, he went on a mission to 13 different countries.

He visited the Soviet Union and met U.S. President John F. Kennedy in Washington, D.C. However, the Laotian Civil War made his job very hard. In 1964, the Pathet Lao resistance movement began to fight against other groups. This conflict changed the politics of the nation forever.

In 1975, the Pathet Lao forces took control of the country. The king was forced to give up his throne on December 2, 1975. This ended the 600-year-old monarchy in Laos. He and his family were later sent to a re-education camp in the north. The government reported that the king died from malaria in 1978.
