Suharto was a prominent Indonesian military officer and politician. He served as the second president of Indonesia. His leadership lasted from 1967 until 1998. This 31-year period was one of the longest presidencies in the 20th century. He led the nation through a period known as the New Order. This regime was characterized by a strong, centralized government. The military held a dominant role in running the state.

Suharto's early life was marked by humble beginnings and family changes. He was born on June 8, 1921, in Kemusuk. This village was near Yogyakarta in the Dutch East Indies. His Javanese Muslim parents divorced shortly after his birth. Because of this, he lived with foster parents for much of his youth. He even worked in rice paddies to help his stepfather. These early years were very different from the lives of other nationalist leaders.

His military career began during a time of great global change. He first joined the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army in 1940. Later, he served in security forces organized by the Japanese occupation. He also joined the newly formed Indonesian Army during the independence struggle. He rose through the ranks to become a major general. A key turning point occurred in late 1965. Following an attempted coup, Suharto-led troops countered the movement. This led to a nationwide violent anti-communist purge.

Suharto officially took power through formal appointments. In March 1967, the MPRS appointed him acting president. He was then appointed president on March 27, 1968. When he began his term, the country faced massive inflation. Prices were rising at a rate of over 650%. To fix this, he appointed an economic advisory group. They implemented free market policies to stabilize the nation. By 1969, the country had entered a period of price stability.

His economic policies led to significant industrial growth. Indonesia's GDP grew by approximately 7% per year. This growth improved education and helped domestic entrepreneurship rise. In 1982, the People's Consultative Assembly named him "Father of Development." He also achieved rice self-sufficiency for the nation. For this achievement, the United Nations FAO awarded him the Ceres Medal in 1986.

However, his rule was also defined by authoritarianism and corruption. He built a cult of personality that made him the undisputed leader. His regime was criticized for widespread human rights violations. This included the persecution of ethnic Chinese and various religious groups. He also ordered an invasion of East Timor in 1975. This led to a 23-year occupation and genocide. Furthermore, his family was accused of massive corruption. Estimates suggest they misappropriated between US$1.5 billion and US$5 billion.

Economic and social pressures eventually led to his downfall. The 1997 Asian financial crisis caused severe economic turmoil. This crisis fueled widespread public dissatisfaction and unrest. Under immense pressure, Suharto resigned in May 1998. He had held power for more than three decades. He died in January 2008 and received a state military funeral. Today, his legacy remains highly divisive among the Indonesian public.
