Lobato was born on May 24, 1946. His birthplace was a place called Soibada. At that time, the region was known as Portuguese Timor. He grew up to become a prominent politician. His career was tied to the struggle for his nation's direction. He eventually rose to the highest levels of government.

In late 1975, Lobato reached a major milestone. He became the first prime minister of the Democratic Republic of East Timor. This specific term of leadership was very brief. He served from November 28 until December 7, 1975. This short period marked a critical moment for the new republic. Shortly after his term, the Indonesian military invaded the territory.

Following the invasion, Lobato had to change his way of life. He and other key leaders from Fretilin fled their homes. They moved into the Timorese hinterland to continue their work. The hinterland refers to the wild, rural areas far from urban centers. There, they fought against the occupying forces. They lived in the mountains to resist the military presence.

Conflict continued for several years in the rugged terrain. On December 31, 1978, a significant event occurred at Mount Mindelo. Indonesian special forces conducted an ambush there. This group was led by Lieutenant Prabowo Subianto. Subianto later became the son-in-law of President Suharto. He is also the Indonesian president as of 2024.

During this ambush, Lobato was killed. He had been shot in the stomach. His body was transported to the city of Dili. There, the Indonesian press arrived to inspect his remains. The exact fate of his body remains a mystery. No one knows for certain what happened to him after that day. This uncertainty has created a lasting issue for his nation.

The government of East Timor continues to address this loss. They are still pursuing the matter with the Indonesian government. Their goal is to find his remains. They want to ensure he receives a proper burial. This search for closure is a major part of his legacy. It connects the past struggles to modern diplomatic efforts.

Today, the impact of Lobato's life is visible in East Timor. His name is used to honor his service and sacrifice. The nation's main airport bears his name. It is officially called Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport. This serves as a permanent reminder of his role in history. He remains a central figure in the story of his people.
