Sukarno was a central figure in the history of modern Indonesia. He was a statesman, an activist, and a revolutionary leader. From 1945 to 1967, he served as the first president of Indonesia.

His life was defined by the struggle for independence from Dutch colonial rule. He became a symbol of national unity for millions of people. Today, he is often called the "Father of Proclamation" for his role in founding the nation.

Sukarno's early life was shaped by his diverse background and education. He was born in 1901 in Surabaya, East Java. His father was a Javanese teacher, and his mother was a Hindu from Bali. This mixed heritage was reflected in his ability to master many languages. He spoke Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, Indonesian, and Dutch fluently. He also studied German, English, French, Arabic, and Japanese.

In 1926, he earned an engineering degree from the Bandoeng Institute of Technology. He used his training to work as an architect and urban planner. He designed many private houses and later worked on major national monuments.

His political journey began with a focus on social and economic justice. While studying, he developed an ideology called Marhaenism. This was named after Marhaen, a local peasant he had met. Marhaenism focused on the needs of small farmers and workers.

In 1927, Sukarno helped found the Indonesian National Party, or PNI. The PNI fought against imperialism and capitalism. The party sought to unite the many different ethnic groups in the Dutch East Indies. Sukarno wanted to create a united, secular Indonesia through this movement.

Because of his activism, Sukarno faced significant hardship under Dutch rule. The colonial government viewed his nationalist speeches as a threat. In December 1929, authorities arrested him during a raid in Yogyakarta. He was tried in Bandung in 1930. During the trial, he delivered a famous speech titled "Indonesia Accuses."

He was sentenced to four years in prison. However, he was released early in 1931 due to intense public and political pressure. He spent much of the following decade under Dutch detention.

World War II brought a major shift in Sukarno's political position. When Japanese forces invaded, they released Sukarno from his detention. He and other nationalists collaborated with the Japanese. They helped the Japanese war effort in exchange for support for nationalist ideas.

This period ended with the Japanese surrender. On August 17, 1945, Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta declared Indonesian independence. Sukarno was then appointed as the nation's first president. He led the resistance against Dutch attempts to re-colonize the islands until 1949.

As president, Sukarno's leadership style and foreign policy evolved. In 1959, he replaced parliamentary democracy with a system called "Guided Democracy." He believed this was necessary to restore stability and stop regional rebellions.

On the world stage, he was a leader in the Non-Aligned Movement. This movement included nations that did not want to side with Western or Soviet powers. He even proposed creating a new international body called CONEFO in Jakarta. His aggressive foreign policies increased tensions with Western nations and moved Indonesia closer to the Soviet Union.

Political instability eventually led to a violent transition of power. In 1965, a coup attempt occurred, allegedly organized by leaders in the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI). This event triggered a massive military takeover led by General Suharto.

A large-scale anti-communist purge followed the coup attempt. Historical records indicate that between 500,000 and over one million people were killed. During this time, Sukarno was removed from power and placed under house arrest. He remained under this restriction until his death in 1970.

Sukarno's legacy remains a powerful force in Indonesian society. During the early years of the Suharto regime, his achievements were often minimized. However, as the New Order fell in 1998, interest in his life returned. He is remembered as a founding father who fought for the dignity of his people. His name is still used today in major landmarks, such as the Soekarno–Hatta International Airport. Many Indonesians continue to view him as a vital symbol of the nation's independence and unity.
