The Indonesian National Revolution was a complex period of intense struggle. It involved both armed conflict and diplomatic negotiations. This struggle occurred between 1945 and 1949. The Republic of Indonesia fought for its right to rule itself. At the same time, the Dutch Empire attempted to maintain its colonial control. This era changed the social and political structure of the region forever.

Long before the revolution, the foundations for independence were being laid. In 1908, a movement known as the Day of National Awakening began. Various political groups, such as the PNI and Sarekat Islam, grew rapidly. Some groups chose to cooperate with the Dutch through the Volksraad, or People's Council. Others chose a non-cooperative strategy to demand self-government. These movements helped build a sense of national identity among the people.

World War II played a crucial role in changing the landscape of Indonesia. For three and a half years, Japan occupied the islands. The Japanese military was able to quickly defeat the Dutch forces. During this occupation, Japan encouraged nationalist sentiment to gain political advantages. They also destroyed much of the existing Dutch economic and political infrastructure. This destruction created a power vacuum that Indonesian leaders could eventually fill.

On August 17, 1945, Sukarno and Hatta proclaimed Indonesian independence. This happened just two days after Japan's unconditional surrender. Sukarno was elected as the first president of the Republic. Hatta was elected as the vice-president. Following this, the Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence (PPKI) helped form the new government. Many young people, known as pemuda, became very active in the movement. They formed various struggle groups to protect the new Republic.

The revolution was characterized by a split between urban and rural control. Dutch military forces and Allied troops often controlled major cities and industrial assets. They held onto important towns on the islands of Java and Sumatra. However, the Republican forces maintained control over the countryside. This created a military stalemate where neither side could fully win. The fighting was often sporadic but very intense.

During the early months, a period known as the Bersiap occurred. This was a time of great uncertainty and violence following the Japanese surrender. Many people considered "out-groups," such as Dutch internees or Eurasians, faced severe danger. Estimates of the death toll during the Bersiap period vary widely. Some sources suggest between 3,500 and 30,000 deaths occurred. In other battles, such as the Battle of Surabaya, thousands of fighters were also killed.

Diplomacy eventually became the most important tool for ending the conflict. The United States applied significant international pressure on the Netherlands. The U.S. threatened to stop all economic aid for rebuilding the Netherlands after World War II. This pressure, combined with the military stalemate, forced a change in policy. By the end of 1949, the Netherlands transferred sovereignty to the Republic of the United States of Indonesia. This marked the official end of Dutch colonial administration in the region.

The revolution had lasting effects on Indonesian society. It ended the era of Dutch colonial rule, except in Dutch New Guinea. The struggle changed ethnic castes and reduced the power of local rulers, known as raja. While it did not immediately improve the economy for everyone, some Indonesians gained more roles in commerce. The revolution established a new nation and a new way of life for millions of people.
