The Cold War was a period of intense geopolitical rivalry. It occurred between the United States and the Soviet Union (USSR). These two superpowers led opposing global groups. The Western Bloc followed capitalism and democratic ideas. The Eastern Bloc followed communism. This era is called a "cold war" because the two main nations never fought each other directly. Instead, they competed through many different methods of influence. They engaged in an arms race with nuclear weapons. They also competed through technology, espionage, and propaganda.

This rivalry functioned through several complex mechanisms. Both sides used economic aid to win the loyalty of non-aligned nations. They also engaged in proxy wars to influence regional conflicts. In a proxy war, the superpowers support opposing sides in a third country. This allowed them to compete without starting a direct world war. They also participated in the Space Race to prove technological superiority. Diplomacy and sports were used to showcase national strength. Even economic embargoes served as tools of competition.

The conflict began after the Second World War ended in 1945. During that war, the US and USSR were actually allies. However, tensions rose quickly as the war concluded. By 1949, the USSR had installed satellite governments in Eastern Europe. This created a political division known as the "Iron Curtain." In 1947, the US adopted the Truman Doctrine. This policy aimed to contain the spread of communism. The US also launched the Marshall Plan in 1948. This plan provided over $13 billion to rebuild Western Europe.

Military alliances defined the structure of the era. In 1949, the United States and its allies formed NATO. NATO is a defensive military alliance. The Soviet Union responded by forming the Warsaw Pact in 1955. This pact helped the USSR maintain control over Eastern Europe. The two alliances created a divided Europe for decades. In 1961, East Germany built the Berlin Wall. This structure prevented citizens from fleeing to West Berlin.

Many specific conflicts occurred during this time. The Korean War lasted from 1950 to 1953. It ended in a stalemate between the two sides. The Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 was a very dangerous moment. It involved Soviet missiles in Cuba and US missiles in Europe. Many historians believe this was the closest the world came to nuclear war. The Vietnam War was another major proxy conflict. It lasted from 1955 to 1975 and ended in a US defeat.

Relations between the superpowers shifted over time. In the 1970s, a period called détente began. During détente, the US and USSR signed treaties to limit nuclear arsenals. However, tensions rose again in 1979. The Soviet-Afghan War and changes in Iran and Nicaragua caused new friction. In 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader of the Soviet Union. He introduced policies to expand political freedoms. These changes contributed to the revolutions of 1989 in the Eastern Bloc.

The Cold War officially ended in 1991. This happened when the Soviet Union dissolved. Many Soviet republics became fully independent states. The Russian Federation became the successor state to the USSR. This dissolution changed the global political map forever. The era of superpower rivalry and ideological division finally came to a close.
