The Dutch East Indies was a vast colonial territory held by the Netherlands.

Most of this land now makes up the modern nation of Indonesia. For centuries before Europeans arrived, the archipelago was a central hub for global trade. It connected Southeast Asia to India, the Arabian Peninsula, and East Africa. Various states existed there, such as the Srivijaya and Majapahit empires. These societies were often built on coastal trade or inland farming.

Cultural life in the islands was very diverse. Many people followed Hindu-Buddhist traditions for a long time. Later, trade links helped spread Islam throughout the region. By the 16th century, many areas were ruled by Islamic kingdoms, though Bali remained largely Hindu. Because of all this trading, Malay became a lingua franca, which is a common language used by different groups to communicate. European explorers like Marco Polo visited the area in the late 13th century. The Portuguese arrived in 1512 to establish trading posts in the Maluku Islands.

The Dutch entered the region to find spices directly. In 1595, the first Dutch expedition set sail for the East Indies. The journey was extremely difficult for the sailors. Only one third of the original crew survived to return to Holland. To manage the growing trade, the Dutch government created the United East India Company, or VOC, in 1602.

The VOC was given a charter to build fortresses, sign treaties, and wage war. They established Batavia, now known as Jakarta, as their main center of operations.

The VOC focused on monopolies for spices like nutmeg, cloves, peppers, and cinnamon. Later, they introduced cash crops like coffee, tea, cacao, rubber, and sugar. However, the company struggled with corruption, mismanagement, and the high cost of war. These problems led to bankruptcy by the end of the 18th century. In 1800, the Dutch government took over the company's trading posts. This transition turned the commercial network into the official Dutch East Indies.

Dutch rule relied heavily on exploitative labor and slavery. The VOC expanded existing local systems of slavery to work on plantations and in domestic service. It is estimated that around 1 million slaves were active during the 17th and 18th centuries. Slaves were often captured in raids or bought at local markets. Many faced extremely harsh punishments for disobedience. While slavery was officially abolished in parts of the colony in 1860, it continued in other areas for a long time. This was partly because the Dutch did not want to spend money to free slaves on distant islands.

Throughout the 19th century, the Dutch fought many wars to maintain control.

Indigenous leaders, such as Prince Diponegoro, resisted Dutch expansion. These conflicts caused hundreds of thousands of deaths. By the early 20th century, the colony reached its largest size after the occupation of Western New Guinea. During this time, the social order was strictly divided by race. The Dutch elite lived separately from the native population. However, local intellectuals began to use the term "Indonesia" to imagine a single nation state.

World War II brought major changes when Japan occupied the islands. This occupation dismantled much of the Dutch colonial economy. After Japan surrendered in August 1945, nationalist leaders Sukarno and Hatta declared Indonesian independence. This led to the Indonesian National Revolution. The Dutch tried to regain control by sending roughly 220,000 troops to fight.

The conflict only ended when the United States threatened to stop financial aid to the Netherlands. In 1949, the Dutch finally recognized Indonesian sovereignty. The colony officially ceased to exist after the Dutch handed over Western New Guinea in 1962.
