Many people choose to live in or near coastal areas. These coastal regions are often inhabited by many different groups. These include Papuans, Melanesians, and Austronesians. Migrants from other parts of Indonesia also live in these coastal towns.

Human history in this region is incredibly long. Evidence suggests humans have inhabited the island for over 50,000 years.

Ancient trade networks connected the area to the wider world. As early as the 7th century, Chinese records mentioned a land called Tungki. This land was a source of spices. Around 600 AD, the Srivijaya empire referred to the island as Janggi. By the 14th century, the Majapahit Empire recognized territories like Wwanin. This area is now known as the Onin Peninsula.

European influence changed the political structure of the region. In the late 16th century, European traders arrived for the spice trade. The Dutch Empire eventually became the dominant power. They annexed the western part of New Guinea into the Dutch East Indies. The Dutch called the area Nieuw Guinea. They remained in control until 1962. Following negotiations, the Dutch transferred the territory to the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA). In 1969, Indonesia took control after the Act of Free Choice.

The region has used many different official names over time. Between 1895 and 1962, it was Netherlands New Guinea. From 1962 to 1973, it was known as West New Guinea or West Irian. It was called Irian Jaya from 1973 until 2002. Today, the official name is Papua.

The names used often depend on political views. Independence activists frequently use the name West Papua. Indonesian officials also use West Papua to name the westernmost province. The name Irian was once an acronym for joining the Republic of Indonesia and opposing the Netherlands.

Today, the region is governed as six autonomous provinces.
