Arafura Sea

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Arafura Sea is a vast and significant body of water. It is located in the southeast of the Malay Archipelago. This sea sits directly over the continental shelf between Australia and Western New Guinea. Western New Guinea is the Indonesian portion of the island of New Guinea. The sea is both long and wide in its physical shape. Most areas of the sea are shallow, but the depth increases as you move toward the west. It is categorized by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) as a body of water within the East Indian Archipelago.

The geography of the sea is defined by several neighboring water bodies and landmasses. To the south, it is bordered by the northern coast of Australia. The Timor Sea lies to its west. To the northwest, you will find the Banda and Seram seas. The eastern boundary is marked by the Torres Strait. Beyond that strait to the east lies the Coral Sea. The IHO provides very specific limits for the sea. These include lines stretching from Karoefa in New Guinea to the York Peninsula in Australia. They also trace boundaries through the Tanimbar Islands and the southern points of Selaroe.

The seafloor of this region contains a major geological feature called the Arafura Shelf. This shelf is a specific section of the larger Sahul Shelf. This area tells a story of how the Earth has changed over time. During the last glacial maximum, sea levels were much lower than they are today. During that time, the Arafura Shelf was not underwater. It, along with the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Torres Strait, formed a large, flat land bridge. This bridge physically connected Australia and New Guinea. This combined landmass was known as the continent of Sahul. This connection was important because it allowed humans to migrate from Asia into Australia.

The history of the name "Arafura Sea" is quite complex. European records of the name date back to at least 1663. In that year, Joan Blaeu included the name on a wall map of the East Indies. He noted that the inland inhabitants of the Moluccas called themselves "Alfores." Some researchers once suggested the name came from the Portuguese word "Alfours," which means "free men." However, most evidence points to a different origin. It is more likely named after the Harrafora people. This is an indigenous name for the "people of mountains" in the Moluccas.

Many explorers and researchers documented the Harrafora people throughout history. Thomas Forrest sailed through the Moluccas in 1775. He recorded that the Harrafora lived at the western end of New Guinea. He also noted their presence in Magindano, which is Mindanao. In 1804, the geographer Conrad Malte-Brun repeated these reports. He even added Borneo to the list of places where this group lived. In 1837, George Windsor Earl compiled sailing directions for the sea. He used the narratives of Lieutenants Kolff and Modera from the Royal Netherlands Navy. These various accounts helped shape the historical understanding of the region.

Today, the Arafura Sea is known as one of the richest marine fisheries on Earth. This is a notable fact because many other marine ecosystems are currently collapsing. The sea provides many important economic resources. It is particularly rich in shrimp and demersal fish. Demersal fish are species that live near the bottom of the sea. Specific economically important species include barramundi and grouper. Other important species include Penaeid shrimp and Nemipteridae fishes. The abundance of life makes this a vital area for the global food supply.

Because the sea is so productive, it faces significant environmental challenges. There is increasing pressure on the natural resources of the Arafura. This pressure often comes from illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing activities. To address these issues, an expert group was formed. The Arafura and Timor Seas Expert Forum (ATSEF) was established in 2002. The goal of the ATSEF is to promote sustainable management. They work to ensure that the fishing and the environment are both protected for the future. This helps maintain the balance of one of the world's most important marine systems.
