geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Arafura Sea is a very big sea. It sits between Australia and New Guinea. To the west is the Timor Sea. To the east is the Torres Strait.

This sea is long and wide. The water gets deeper as you go west. Long ago, the water was lower. This made a bridge of land. People used that land to walk to new places.

Many animals live in the sea. It is a great place for fish. You can find shrimp and grouper there. It is one of the best places for fish on Earth.
