This archipelago is located within the Maluku Islands. It sits in the Arafura Sea, which is south of West Papua and New Guinea. It is also north of Australia. Some people classify the archipelago as part of Asia. Other scholars consider it part of Melanesia. The regency is an administrative division of the Maluku Province. It covers a total land area of 6,426.77 square kilometers.

The geography of the islands is shaped by their unique geologic history. Unlike much of the Maluku region, these islands belong to the Australian Plate.

They sit upon the Australia-New Guinea continental shelf. During past ice ages, lower sea levels created land bridges. These bridges once connected the islands to Australia and New Guinea. Because of this, the flora and fauna belong to the Australasian realm. The plants and animals are closely related to those found in New Guinea. The islands feature tropical moist broadleaf forests, savannas, and mangroves.

There are approximately 676 islands within the archipelago. However, only 28 of these islands are inhabited by people. The islands are mostly low-lying with occasional low hills. Meandering channels of water separate the different landmasses. Tanahbesar, also known as Wokam, is the largest island in the group. The chief port, Dobo, is located on the island of Wamar. Other significant islands include Kola, Kobroor, Maikoor, Koba, and Trangan.

The history of the islands is defined by extensive maritime trading networks. Long before European arrival, the islands had strong links to the Banda Islands. Bugis and Makasarese traders also visited the area regularly. Traditional society was organized around lineage-based clans rather than strict hierarchies. These communities used a socio-political system of ritual bonds called Ursia and Urlima.

Portuguese navigators sighted the islands between 1522 and 1524. The Spanish navigator Álvaro de Saavedra also sighted them in 1528.

Dutch colonization began with a contract in 1623. The Dutch East India Company, or VOC, initially had limited influence. They monitored the islands from the Banda Islands. The VOC collected products like pearls, sago, and birds-of-paradise. A Dutch post and a small fort were established on Wokam Island in 1659. In the late 18th century, residents rebelled against VOC commercial monopolies. The prince Nuku led an anti-Dutch rebellion that affected the region. In 1787, the Muslim population of Ujir Island killed the Dutch garrison. The Dutch eventually suppressed the rebels in 1791.

In 1857, the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace visited the islands.

His observations helped him realize the islands were once connected to New Guinea. The population has grown steadily over the decades. The 2011 Census recorded 84,138 people. By 2020, the population reached 102,237. Mid-2024 estimates place the population at 112,531 people. This total includes 57,767 males and 54,764 females. Most residents are of mixed Austronesian and Papuan descent.

Cultural diversity is evident in the many languages spoken. There are fourteen indigenous languages, such as Batuley, Kola, and Ujir. These belong to the Central Malayo-Polynesian language family. Religion is also diverse across the regency. Most people are Christian, but there is a Muslim minority. In 2010, Protestants made up 59.84% of the population. Catholics accounted for 9.32%, and Muslims made up 29.97%.
