Most of this territory is now the nation of Indonesia. For a long time, these islands were part of a busy global trade network. People from India, Arabia, and East Africa visited the islands for centuries. Many different cultures lived there, including Hindu-Buddhist and Islamic groups. They used a language called Malay to trade with one another.

Trading companies first arrived to find valuable spices. In 1595, the first Dutch expedition set sail to reach the East Indies. It was a hard journey for the sailors. Only one third of the original crew made it back to Holland. Later, the Dutch government formed the United East India Company, or VOC, in 1602.

The VOC built a capital city called Batavia. They traded items like nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon. They also grew crops like coffee, tea, rubber, and sugar.

Control of the islands changed many times over the years. The VOC went bankrupt by the end of the 18th century. In 1800, the Dutch government took over the trading posts. This created the official Dutch East Indies.

During the 1800s, the Dutch fought many wars against local rulers. These wars caused hundreds of thousands of deaths. The Dutch also used a system of slavery to get labor. Many people were forced to work on plantations or in homes. Slavery was finally abolished in parts of the colony in 1860.

In the early 20th century, the colony reached its largest size. The Dutch occupied Western New Guinea during this time.

Local intellectuals began to dream of a new nation. They used the name Indonesia for the land. During World War II, Japan occupied the islands. This occupation broke apart the old Dutch system. After Japan surrendered in 1945, leaders Sukarno and Hatta declared independence.

The fight for freedom was a long and difficult process. The Dutch sent 220,000 troops to try to take control back. This period is known as the Indonesian National Revolution. Eventually, the United States pressured the Netherlands to stop. At a meeting in 1949, the Dutch recognized Indonesia as a free nation.

In 1962, the Dutch gave up their last piece of land, Dutch New Guinea. By then, the Dutch East Indies had completely ceased to exist.
