history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Indonesian National Awakening was a special time in history. It happened during the first half of the 20th century. Before this, many different people lived on the islands. They did not all share one political identity. The Dutch ruled these lands as the Dutch East Indies. They wanted to make profits and have control. Over time, the Dutch created specific borders for their colony. These borders later became the shape of modern Indonesia.

Many things helped people feel like one nation. New schools helped create an educated group of leaders. People also used print media and urban living. Mass entertainment like film and music brought people together. Even religion and new ideas like communism played a part. Some people suffered under unfair Dutch rules. This suffering helped people want change. Leaders like Kartini, Tirto, and Semaun spoke for a unified land. They wanted freedom and a modern way of life.

Education changed how people saw their future. The Dutch started an Ethical Policy to help. This policy expanded schools for local people. In 1925, the government focused on vocational schools. By 1940, over 2 million students attended these schools. This helped raise the literacy rate from 6.3 percent. Many students went to Dutch medium schools. These schools taught ideas about democracy and freedom. This new education helped a small group of leaders grow.

New groups began to form to seek independence. Budi Utomo was a youth group started in 1908. The Indische Partij formed in 1912. Sarekat Islam also started in 1912 to bring people together. In 1920, the Communist Party of Indonesia was created. Later, in 1927, Sukarno founded the Indonesian National Party in Bandung. In 1928, the Youth Pledge was made. This pledge called for one country, one people, and one language. The name "Indonesia" helped everyone feel united.

The path to independence was not easy. The Dutch often stopped political groups. They even jailed leaders like Sukarno in 1929. World War II changed everything for the islands. In 1942, Japan invaded the Dutch East Indies. This ended over three hundred years of Dutch rule. After Japan surrendered in 1945, the Dutch tried to return. However, the idea of Indonesia was too strong to stop. On August 17, 1945, nationalists finally proclaimed independence.
