Diponegoro is remembered for leading the Java War against Dutch colonial rule. This conflict lasted from 1825 to 1830. Today, he is recognized as a national hero in Indonesia. His life and struggle continue to inspire Indonesian nationalism and identity.

Diponegoro's early life was shaped by intense political shifts in Java. During his youth, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) dissolved. This period also saw a British invasion of Java. In 1810, his father temporarily stepped aside to allow Diponegoro's father to hold power. Later, the British removed the Sultan from the throne in 1812. Diponegoro acted as an adviser during this time. He even declined an offer from Stamford Raffles to become Sultan. When his father died in 1814, Diponegoro was passed over for the throne. The Dutch supported his younger half-brother, Hamengkubuwono IV, instead. This political exclusion created deep tensions within the royal court.

Several social and natural factors fueled the eventual rebellion. Diponegoro was a devout Muslim who preferred a life of religious seclusion. He grew concerned as the court relaxed religious observances. He also disliked the pro-Dutch policies of the ruling Sultan. Economic problems added to the unrest among the population. Local farmers faced high taxes and frequent crop failures. Javanese nobles were frustrated because the Dutch restricted their land-leasing rights. Natural disasters also played a role in the public mood. A famine and plague spread in 1821. Mount Merapi erupted in 1822, and a cholera epidemic occurred in 1824. These events led many to believe a great change was coming.

Many people believed Diponegoro was the Ratu Adil, or the just ruler. This was a figure predicted in the Pralembang Jayabaya prophecy. When the Java War broke out in 1825, Diponegoro used guerrilla warfare. This tactic involved quick, unexpected attacks and ambushes.

Initially, the Dutch suffered large losses. They lacked a coherent strategy to fight such mobile rebels. They also struggled because Diponegoro's forces denied them food supplies. The war also had a racial dimension. Diponegoro's troops targeted the Dutch and the Chinese minority. They viewed these groups as foreign infidels who were pillaging Java.

The Dutch eventually changed their military approach to stop the insurgency. General De Kock was sent to lead the campaign. He implemented a strategy involving fortified camps, known as benteng.

These well-defended camps occupied key landmarks to limit rebel movement. Mobile forces then worked to find and engage Diponegoro's troops. By 1829, the initiative shifted toward the Dutch. Diponegoro was forced into a defensive position as his military strength declined.

The war ended through a controversial series of events in 1830. Diponegoro entered negotiations, demanding a free state under a Sultan. He also sought to become the Muslim caliph for all of Java. In March 1830, he accepted an invitation to meet in Magelang. The meeting was held under a flag of truce. However, on 28 March, the Dutch took him prisoner.

Diponegoro viewed this as a betrayal of the truce. The Dutch claimed he had simply surrendered. Different artists captured this moment differently. Raden Saleh painted him as a defiant victim. Nicolaas Pieneman painted him as a subjugated man.

After his capture, Diponegoro lived in exile for many years. He was first taken to Semarang and then to Batavia. In 1830, he was shipped to Manado in Sulawesi. By July 1833, he was moved to Makassar. He was held in Fort Rotterdam because the Dutch feared he could escape.

During this time, he wrote his autobiography, the Babad Diponegoro. He also composed manuscripts on Javanese history. Diponegoro died on 8 January 1855, at the age of 69. He was buried in Kampung Melayu, and his tomb remains a site for pilgrims today.

Diponegoro's legacy is deeply embedded in modern Indonesia. His dynasty still holds secular power as governors in Yogyakarta. In 1973, he was officially named a National Hero. His name is used for many important institutions and landmarks. This includes Diponegoro University and various military commands and navy ships.

In 2020, a historic symbol of his struggle was returned to Indonesia. This was his gold-inlaid kris, a Javanese dagger. The Dutch King Willem-Alexander presented it to President Joko Widodo. The kris now resides in the National Museum of Indonesia as a symbol of resilience.
