The Mataram Sultanate was the last major independent Javanese kingdom on the island of Java. It functioned as a dominant political force from the late 16th century until the early 18th century. The kingdom radiated power from the interior of Central Java. While people often called their realm Bhumi Jawa or Tanah Jawi, the name Mataram refers to specific historical plains. These plains lie south of Mount Merapi near modern cities like Yogyakarta and Prambanan. The capital was located in the Kota Gede area on the outskirts of southern Yogyakarta.

The origins of the sultanate began with the rise of Sutawijaya, also known as Panembahan Senapati. In the 1570s, his father, Kyai Gedhe Pamanahan, was granted the land of Mataram by the King of Pajang. At that time, Mataram was merely a vassal state of Pajang. After the death of Sultan Hadiwijaya in 1582, Pajang experienced major power struggles. Sutawijaya took control around 1584 and began to separate Mataram from Pajang's influence. He launched military campaigns against both Pajang and the former overlord, Demak. By 1586, the Pajang kingdom had ended, and Mataram rose as a new sovereign power.

Following the establishment of the state, Senapati began an expansive reign. He moved east along the Solo River, leading to many conflicts. Although he could not break the defenses of the wealthy port of Surabaya in 1586, he conquered Madiun in 1591. He also took control of Kediri and Ponorogo. His influence eventually reached as far east as Pasuruan. In the west, he forced Cirebon and Galuh to acknowledge his authority by 1595. Senapati died in 1601 and was entombed in Kota Gede, leaving a firm foundation for his successors.

The sultanate reached its absolute peak during the reign of Sultan Agung Anyokrokusumo. He ruled from 1613 to 1646, a period often called the golden age of Javanese power. Sultan Agung was an ambitious military leader who sought to unite almost all of Java. He successfully captured many northern port cities to expand his territory. His most difficult challenge was the city of Surabaya, which was heavily fortified and surrounded by swamps. To defeat Surabaya, Agung used a strategic siege rather than a direct invasion. He established a blockade by land and sea to starve the city into submission. In 1625, Surabaya finally fell, making Mataram the undisputed ruler of much of Java.

During his reign, Sultan Agung also faced the Dutch East India Company, known as the VOC. In 1628, Agung launched a massive campaign to siege Batavia, a Dutch settlement. This campaign was plagued by severe logistical problems. To support his troops, Agung built rice barns along the northern coast of West Java. He also sent Javanese ships filled with rice rations to the front lines. However, Dutch spies discovered these supplies and burned them down. Without these food sources, many Mataram troops suffered from starvation. This failure meant that the Dutch presence in Batavia remained outside of Mataram's control.

Despite his great successes, the sultanate faced constant internal challenges. Rebellions occurred in places like Pajang, Pati, and Tembayat. Some historians suggest these revolts happened because the failure at Batavia damaged the image of Mataram's invincibility. However, other records show that rebellions had occurred even during the height of the sultan's power. In the east, Agung also fought a "holy war" against the Hindu kingdom of Blambangan. While Blambangan surrendered in 1639, the region remained a point of tension. These conflicts required the sultan to spend much of his time suppressing revolts rather than expanding further.

The decline of the Mataram Sultanate began after the death of Sultan Agung in 1645. The kingdom gradually lost its territory and political strength to the Dutch East India Company. By the mid-18th century, the VOC had gained significant control over the region. By 1749, Mataram had officially become a vassal state of the company. This meant the once-mighty independent kingdom now had to follow the rules of the Dutch. The era of a unified, independent Javanese empire under Mataram had effectively ended.
