The Mataram kingdom, also known as the Medang kingdom, was a powerful Hindu-Buddhist civilization. It flourished on the island of Java between the 8th and 11th centuries. The kingdom began in Central Java but later moved its center to East Java. It was a highly sophisticated society with a refined culture. At its peak, it was a dominant empire. Its influence reached beyond Java to Sumatra, Bali, southern Thailand, and parts of the Philippines. It even extended to the Khmer in Cambodia.

The kingdom's strength came from its economy and land management. Most people relied on agriculture, specifically extensive rice farming. This provided the food needed for a large population. Later, the kingdom also benefited from maritime trade across the seas. To manage this wealth, rulers used a system called Sima. Sima was land designated for rice cultivation through a royal edict. The taxes collected from these Sima lands were used for important tasks. Most often, this money funded the construction and maintenance of religious buildings.

Mataram was home to different ruling groups and religious traditions. The kingdom was ruled by the Shailendra dynasty and later the Ishana dynasty. Eventually, the dynasty split into two different kingdoms. These were divided by their religious patronage. One was a Shaivite dynasty, which followed a branch of Hinduism. The other was a Buddhist dynasty. This split led to a period of civil war. The Shaivite dynasty was led by Rakai Pikatan in Java. The Buddhist dynasty was part of the Srivijaya kingdom in Sumatra, led by Balaputra.

Conflict between these groups lasted for many years. In 1016, the Shailendra clan in Srivijaya incited a rebellion. A vassal of Mataram named Wurawari led this rebellion. The rebels sacked the capital of Wwatan in East Java. This allowed Srivijaya to become the most powerful empire in the region. However, the Shaivite dynasty did not disappear. They reclaimed East Java in 1019. This led to the establishment of the Kahuripan kingdom. This new kingdom was led by Airlangga, who was the son of Udayana of Bali.

History tells us that the kingdom was founded by King Sanjaya. The Canggal inscription, dated 732 AD, provides early details. It describes Sanjaya establishing a new kingdom in Southern Central Java. The inscription mentions the island of Yawadwipa, which had much rice and gold. Sanjaya's reign is described as a time of peace and prosperity. He is believed to have come to power around 717 CE. He succeeded King Sanna, who was his uncle. Sanjaya's rule helped unify the region and build early Hindu temples.

One of the most amazing parts of Mataram is its architecture. Between the late 8th and mid-9th centuries, temple construction grew rapidly. These temples, known as candi, are located near the modern city of Yogyakarta. The most famous examples include Kalasan, Sewu, Borobudur, and Prambanan. Borobudur is the largest single Buddhist structure in the world.

These massive stone structures show the incredible skill of Javanese artists. They served as centers for religious life and community identity.

We learn about this ancient world through several different clues. Since few complete written records survived in Java, historians use inscriptions called prasasti. These are words carved into stone or copper plates. They record the religious and political deeds of kings. Archaeologists also study bas reliefs, which are detailed carvings on temple walls. These reliefs show everyday life, such as markets, ships, and palace scenes.

Finally, reports from Chinese, Indian, and Arab travelers provide outside perspectives on the kingdom's greatness.
