Dvaravati refers to a complex cultural and political network in central Thailand.

It flourished from roughly the 6th to the 11th century CE. Rather than being a single centralized state, it was a loose collection of Mon principalities. These polities shared a common artistic and cultural identity. The name Dvaravati itself comes from Sanskrit inscriptions found on ancient coins. In Sanskrit, the term means "that which has gates."

This suggests the importance of fortified or gated settlements.

The development of this culture followed a transitional phase called Proto-Dvaravati. This early stage occurred between the 1st and 5th centuries CE. During this time, communities in the western Menam valleys began to grow. Some settlements were unmoated, while others, like Mueang Uthong, were moated cities.

These moats were large ditches used to protect urban settlements. Archaeological evidence shows people lived in this region as early as 1000 BCE. By the 1st and 2nd centuries CE, these groups participated in maritime exchange networks. They interacted with communities in South Asia, China, and even parts of the Philippines and Vietnam.

As the Dvaravati period progressed, its political centers shifted over time. Researchers debate the exact location of the earliest political heartland. Proposed centers include Ayojjhapura at Si Thep and Sambuka in Nakhon Pathom.

By the mid-7th century, prominence moved toward Lavapura, also known as Lavo. This shift occurred after the incorporation of Tou Yuan in 647 CE. Some scholars believe Lavapura was a separate kingdom that still belonged to the Dvaravati cultural sphere. Other experts suggest the transition lasted until the 10th or 11th centuries following the decline of Si Thep.

Chinese historical records provide important dates for Dvaravati's international presence. Buddhist accounts from the mid-7th century describe a kingdom called To-lo-po-ti. This kingdom was located west of Isanapura and east of Sri Ksetra. Dvaravati sent several diplomatic embassies to the Chinese court. These missions occurred in 583, around 605–616, and in several years during the 640s. These records help historians confirm that Dvaravati was a recognized power in Southeast Asia. The culture also spread into Isan and parts of lowland Laos starting in the 6th century.

The culture is famous for its distinct religious and artistic styles.

Much of this is seen in Buddhist art, such as stone Buddha images. An important discovery in 2019 was the Wat Phra Ngam Inscription. This 6th-century text was found in Nakhon Pathom province. It mentions three regional cities, including Dvāravatī. This suggests that Nakhon Pathom was a central location for the network. Another early reference is the Wat Chanthuek Inscription. This 5th-century Sanskrit text records a queen instructing her daughter to sponsor a Buddha image.

The decline of the Dvaravati network was caused by several regional pressures. It was not the result of a single event. Between the 11th and 13th centuries, the Angkor empire expanded from the lower Mekong basin. In the mid-10th century, King Sujita of Tambralinga led campaigns that seized Lavo. Additionally, political instability in Angkor affected the Menam valley in the 11th century. Invasions from the Pagan kingdom also occurred during the 11th and 12th centuries.

These conflicts gradually eroded Dvaravati influence.

Even as the main period ended, parts of the culture persisted. Mon principalities in the western plains likely lasted until the early 12th century. They eventually came under the influence of the ruler Jayavarman VII. After this, the region entered the Xiān period. This era saw the rise of new groups like Suphannabhum and Ayodhya. By the 14th century, Ayodhya reasserted control over the Lavo region. The legacy of Dvaravati remains visible through its architecture and its role in early Southeast Asian history.
