It was not one single country with one ruler. Instead, it was a group of many small states. These states shared the same art and culture. Most of these people were part of the Mon group. They lived in towns that had large ditches around them. These ditches are called moats. They helped protect the people in their settlements.

Many Mon communities lived near the sea. They used the water to trade with other distant lands. This helped their culture grow and spread. They even sent gifts to the Chinese court. They sent these groups of gifts in the years 583 and 605. They also sent them in 638, 640, 643, 647, and 649. This shows that people far away knew about them.

They look at old coins to find the name. The name Dvaravati comes from a Sanskrit word. It means "that which has gates." They also find old stone statues of Buddha. These statues show the beautiful art of the Mon people. Some researchers found an inscription from the 6th century. It was found at Wat Phra Ngam in Nakhon Pathom. This helps us see where the most important cities were.

History shows that Dvaravati changed over many years.

It started as a phase called Proto-Dvaravati. This early time was between the 1st and 5th centuries. One early town was U Thong in Suphan Buri. Another important place was Si Thep. By the mid-7th century, a place called Lavapura became very important. Some people think Dvaravati was at its strongest from the 7th to the 9th centuries. This is when their culture was most famous.

Eventually, the Dvaravati way of life began to fade.

This happened because of many different pressures. The Angkor empire grew very large and strong nearby. There were also wars with groups like Tambralinga and Pagan. These events caused the old states to change or end. After Dvaravati, new groups like Suphannabhum and Ayodhya rose up. These new kingdoms built upon the land where Dvaravati once lived.
