Sukhothai Kingdom

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Sukhothai Kingdom was a powerful land in Mainland Southeast Asia. It was located in what is now north-central Thailand. The name Sukhothai comes from old words meaning "the dawn of happiness."

This name suggests a time of new beginnings and joy. For a long time, people thought it was the very first Thai kingdom. Today, scholars know the Thai people have even older roots. Still, the kingdom remains a very important part of history. It grew from a busy center for trading goods into a strong state.

Sukhothai grew by using its location to help people trade. It sat near paths that linked many different groups of people. These paths connected cities in the west to lands in the north. It also linked people in the south to the river basins. By the year 1127, it had become a city-state. A city-state is a small area ruled by one city. Eventually, it grew into a full kingdom in the year 1238.

This happened under the leadership of a man named Si Inthrathit.

Many different groups ruled the area before the kingdom was formed. In the 7th century, it was part of a group called Dvaravati Lavo. Later, the Qiān people held authority over the land. After the Qiān were defeated by Angkor in 946 CE, other groups moved in. For a short time, the city was part of Haripuñjaya. By the mid-12th century, the Xiān monarchs took control again.

They were a dynasty that came from the Qiān people. The area changed hands many times before it became independent.

One of the most famous leaders was Ram Khamhaeng the Great. He ruled the kingdom from 1279 to 1298. During his time, the kingdom grew very large. He is believed to have brought Theravada Buddhism to the land. He also helped create the first Thai script for writing.

]] Ram Khamhaeng also started relations with Yuan China. This helped the kingdom learn to make sangkhalok ware. These were special ceramics used for trade. This era was a very bright time for the kingdom.

After the great king died, the kingdom began to lose its strength. In 1349, a neighbor called the Ayutthaya Kingdom invaded. Sukhothai stayed as a tributary state for many years. This means they had to give gifts or money to Ayutthaya. In 1438, after King Borommapan died, Ayutthaya took over completely.

Even so, the noble families from Sukhothai still had influence. Today, you can visit the ruins at Sukhothai Historical Park. This site is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.
